Beef Burger
A home-style recipe for Beef Burger. Makes 4 burgers, ready in about 30 minutes, with steps for the usual way and for the air fryer.
Ingredients
- 500 g beef mince (qeema), not too lean
- 1 small onion, grated or very finely chopped, squeezed dry
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp red chilli powder (optional)
- 1 tbsp oil
- 4 cheese slices
- 4 burger buns
- 1 onion, in thin rings
- Ketchup or mayonnaise, to serve
Missing something?
- No burger buns? Use bread slices or roti.
- No mince (qeema)? Use finely chopped chicken or soya granules.
- No onion? Use spring onions, or a little onion powder (less depth).
- No cheese? Use skip it, or use cheese spread.
In a pan
- Mix the qeema with the grated onion, salt, pepper and chilli. Don't overmix.
- Divide into 4 and shape into patties about 1½ cm thick, a little wider than the buns. Press a dent in the middle of each with your thumb.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan on medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through.
- Put a cheese slice on each patty for the last minute and cover the pan so it melts.
- Toast the buns lightly. Add ketchup, a patty and onion rings to each, and close.
Tip: The dent stops the patties puffing up in the middle as they cook.
In the air fryer (about 25 min)
- Mix qeema with chopped onion, salt and pepper and shape into patties.
- Air fry at 200°C for 10 to 12 minutes, turning halfway, until cooked through.
- Add the cheese for the last minute and serve in a bun.
Air fryer basics: Heat the air fryer for 3 to 5 minutes first. Don't fill the basket more than halfway. Brush or spray a little oil. Turn or shake halfway. Use paper liners with holes. Air fryers vary, so check a few minutes early the first time.
