Sloppy Joe
A home-style recipe for Sloppy Joe. Makes 4 burgers, ready in about 30 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 500 g beef mince (qeema)
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped / grated
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 4 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp chilli sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 4 burger buns
Missing something?
- No burger buns? Use bread slices or roti.
- No mince (qeema)? Use finely chopped chicken or soya granules.
- No onion? Use spring onions, or a little onion powder (less depth).
- No tomato? Use 1 tbsp tomato paste per tomato, or 2 tbsp yogurt for tang.
Method
- Heat the oil and fry the onion on medium heat for 5 minutes, until soft.
- Add the qeema and ginger-garlic paste and cook on high heat for 5–7 minutes, breaking it up, until it changes colour and the water dries.
- Add the tomatoes, salt, chilli and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
- Stir in the ketchup, chilli sauce, vinegar, sugar and ¼ cup water. Simmer on low heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring, until thick and saucy but not dry.
- Toast the buns lightly and pile the qeema onto the bottom halves. Close and serve straight away.
Tip: The filling should drop off a spoon, not run; if it's too thin, cook it a few minutes more.
