Aloo Chaat
A home-style recipe for Aloo Chaat. Serves 4, ready in about 35 minutes.
Ingredients
- 4 potatoes (about 600 g)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chillies, finely chopped
- A handful of fresh coriander, chopped
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp chaat masala
- ½ tsp cumin seeds, roasted and crushed
- ¼ tsp red chilli powder
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp imli chutney (optional)
Missing something?
- No potato? Use sweet potato or turnip (shaljam).
- No onion? Use spring onions, or a little onion powder (less depth).
- No green chilli? Use red chilli flakes or extra red chilli powder.
- No fresh coriander? Use skip it, or use fresh mint.
Method
- Boil the potatoes in their skins for 20 minutes, until a knife goes in easily but they still hold their shape. Drain and let them cool.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into 2 cm cubes.
- Put them in a bowl with the onion, green chillies and coriander.
- Add the salt, chaat masala, cumin, chilli and lemon juice and toss gently so the potatoes don't break. Drizzle with the imli chutney and serve.
Tip: A pressure cooker boils the potatoes in about 8 minutes (2 whistles). Boil them a little firm, or the chaat turns mushy.
